KENS-TV in San Antonio, TX featured Daniel Zimmerman in a story about the U.S. Army’s Burn Flight Team. Made up of several other military RTs in addition to Zimmerman, this team is the only one of its kind. Watch the Story

Bill Cornelius shared his thoughts with the Daily Telegram in Temple, TX about how far the profession has come during his years in the field and about earning the 2017 Barnhart Teacher of the Year Award. “When I came into the field a pair of pliers and a screwdriver was all that was needed to fix a mechanical ventilator,” Cornelius said. “It was just pulleys and gears. Now they’re smarter that you are.” Read the Story

Khris O’Brien received an unusual request last November when she was approached by the Milwaukee County Zoo. The patient was a three-year-old bonobo named Noelle. “I have treated children for 35 years so it wasn’t that big of a stretch,” O’Brien said. “Honestly, when I saw this poor, sick, basically, child lying on the gurney, I went into ‘I’ve got to help her’ mode. Nancy Caldwell learned about the COPD Foundation’s Harmonicas for Health program after reading an article about it, and was inspired to bring it to her patients. “It sounded kind of fun so I thought we would give it a try,” Caldwell said. The program kicked off in March, and the group has already given a performance at a local restaurant. The Times Dispatch out of Richmond, VA recently sat down with Caldwell to learn more about her experience. Read the Story

Tracy Cook and Eddie Jackson received the annual Service Learning Award from the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (CHE) for their Camp Catch Your Breath of the Midlands project. “I’m so impressed by the creativity, commitment, and compassion exhibited by these young people,” said CHE Commissioner Dianne Kuhl. “They are representative of the best our state has to offer and a positive example for us all.” Read the Story at Midlandbiz.com

Geri Twomey’s RT program graduates achieved the highest pass rates on the CRT and RRT national licensure exams in Massachusetts for the second year in a row. “Respiratory care graduates from NSCC continue to perform above the national average while competing against not only associate degree programs but bachelor degree programs as well,” Twomey said. “Graduates readily find employment and are often recruited before graduation to full-time positions in and around Boston.” Read the Story at Patch.com

Lisa Trujillo and Karen Schell went back to Ghana in May to continue their mission to bring better health care services and trained RTs to the country, and the trip was covered on Joy Online. “With our specialization with cardiac pulmonary diseases and disorders, we have a very concentrated education that gives us some specialization to be able to be at the bedside, recognize when patients are deteriorating,” Dr. Trujillo said. Dave Woldow explains what he loves about being an RT on the Acuity Healthcare website. According to Dave, who also won his hospital’s Clinician of the Year Award, “My job as a Respiratory Therapist at Acuity Specialty Hospital is exciting, difficult, joyful, sad, but most of all, fulfilling.” Read the Story

Jason Moury received the Outstanding Alumni Award from his college and the honor was highlighted on the Northern Essex Community College website. “Moury is the type of person who inspires us every day through his selfless devotion to helping others,” said Bill Klueber, chairperson of the NECC Alumni Association.
